The Right Bit for the Job
| Bit Type | Function | Common Applications | Size Range | Stock Availability |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DTH Air Bit | Drills a hole in fresh ground. Powered by a DTH air hammer. | Most drilling applications. | 2-¾" – 42" (70 – 1067 mm) | Most popular sizes kept in stock |
| DTH Water Bit | Drills a hole in fresh ground. Powered by a DTH water hammer. | Precision holes, deep holes, sensitive geologies, urban or underground environments. Low noise and dust. | 2-¾" – 16" (70 – 406 mm) | Select sizes kept in stock |
| DTH Hole Opener | Enlarges an existing hole to final diameter. | Bringing a hole to intended size following a smaller exploratory hole. | 6" – 42" (152 – 1067 mm) |
8" / 10" / 12" (203 / 254 / 305 mm) in stock |
| DTH Directional Bit | Drills a hole in fresh ground with the ability to steer. | Horizontal directional drilling (HDD), underground utility lines. | 2-¾" – 10" (70 – 254 mm) | Made to order |
| DTH RC Bit | Drills a hole in fresh ground. Powered by an RC DTH hammer. Air flows from the annulus into the bit (opposite of typical drilling). | Collecting geological samples from exploratory drilling. | 4" – 6" (102 – 152 mm) | Made to order |
| DTH Casing Driver Bit | Pushes casing into an open hole past residual resistance, or drives casing directly into soft, fresh ground. | Installing casing into a drilled hole. Driving casing directly into soft ground. | 2-¾" – 42" (70 – 1067 mm) | Made to order |
FAQ
What’s the difference between a standard DTH bit and a hole opener?
A standard DTH bit drills a hole in fresh ground. A hole opener enlarges an existing hole.
When would I need a casing driver bit instead of a standard DTH bit?
If borehole collapse is a significant issue, try a DKI casing advance system.
In limited contexts with very soft geology, casing drivers can be used to drive casing directly into fresh ground.
